AN ACT to amend the Patents Act, Chapter 253 of the Substantive Laws of Belize, Revised Edition 2011; to clarify the definition of the term Registrar of Intellectual Property; and to provide for matters connected therewith or incidental thereto.

BE IT ENACTED, by and with the advice and consent of the House of Representatives and Senate of Belize and by the authority of the same, as follows:
Short title.
1. This Act may be cited as the
PATENTS (AMENDMENT) ACT, 2018
and shall be read and construed as one with the Patents Act, which, as amended, is hereinafter referred to as the principal Act. [CAP. 253.]
Amendment of section 4.
2. Section 4 of the principal Act is amended as follows -
(a) by repealing subsection (1) and replacing it with the following –
“(1) There shall be appointed by the Judicial and Legal Services Commission a Registrar of Intellectual Property who shall be the Solicitor General.”; and
(b) by inserting next after subsection (1), the following new subsection (1a) –
“ (1a) The Registrar of Intellectual Property shall be subject to the general directions of the Minister and to the provisions of this Act and be responsible for the administration of this Act performing such functions, and exercising such powers, as are conferred on him by this or any other enactment.”.
