Details Details Year of Version 2000 Dates Adopted: March 13, 1973 Type of Text Framework Laws Subject Matter Other Notes The Constitution of the Syrian Arab Republic was adopted in 1973, it has been amended several times, and most recently in 2002.
According to Article 2, the governmental system is a republican system. Islamic jurisprudence is the main source of legislation (Article 3).
As the fundamental law of the Syrian Arab Republic, the Constitution defines the structure of Government in Syria, the rights and duties of the country's citizens and the legislative procedure.

According to the Constitution, the state authorities are divided as following:

The legislative power is exercised by the People's Assembly (Art. 50)

The executive branch consists of the President, the Head of State and a Primer Minister at the head of the Council of Ministers (Arts. 39, 82, 115).

The Judicial authority is independent (Art. 131), and is exercised by the Supreme Judicial Council (Arts. 132,139), and the Supreme Constitutional Court (Art. 71).

The Constitution of Syria guarantees the protection of the rights of authors and inventors (Article 24). Moreover this fundamental law recognizes the right to private property (Article 14) which can be extended to the intellectual property rights.
